The library. Again. Issobell barely held back the urge to groan and bang her head against the heavy wooden table… or the heavy book open in front of her. She stared at the girl across from her. Rowena was seemingly very happy with her head buried in a volume that—Issobell was sure—would be half as tall and nearly as heavy as the girl reading it. She had the distinct feeling that Rowena could do this all day and not get bored. She kind of envied that. “Can’t we take a break? Maybe go raid the kitchens for a snack?”

“It’s probably in the other book…” Rowena obviously wasn’t listening and when Issobell sighed heavily she finally lifted her head. Her brow knit together for a second. “Sorry, what?”

“I said its snack time and I’m going cross-eyed trying to read some of this stuff.” Issobell finally gave in and smacked her head against the pages.

Rowena turned back to the book in front of her and waved. “Just give me a couple more minutes. I might be onto some—“

“Some what?”

Rowena paused and stared at the book for another moment before she turned it around so Issobell could read it. “We have to talk to Dumbledore.”

Issobell read over the pages several times, trying to get the implications to sink in. “Wait, so… with this…” she stabbed her finger into the page. “This… Mirifio Crystal? They can cast a spell at it and… what?”

“And…” Rowena shivered. “We need to talk to Dumbledore… now.”

~*~*~*~

Issobell had figured that telling Professor Snape they needed to see Dumbledore as soon as possible was a good idea. He knew what they were up to so he’d see how important it was that they get the information Rowena had put together to the Head Master. It turned out to be the proper course of action and that night they both found themselves in Dumbledore’s office.

Rowena swallowed thickly. Issobell had said simply ‘you’re the one who figured it out, this is your show!’ when they were waiting for Dumbledore to finish feeding Fawkes. Now she was finding it hard to get the words out. She would have given her brains for a little bit of Gryffindor courage in that moment. “Sir, we’ve been working on that list you gave us and… we think, that is I am pretty sure we’ve found something rather… troubling.”

“I can’t imagine the Death Eaters being up to something pleasant and fun, Miss Crystal.” Dumbledore stared out over his glasses and she nodded. “What have you discovered?”

“Well, sir.” She started flipping through her notes; more of a nervous habit that anything else. “Several of the items are part of a simple containment charm. The quantities suggest that the charm would have to cover a good deal of space…”

“Like a quidditch arena?”

“Yes, sir.” Rowena glanced at Issobell who was nodding beside her. “The rest of the ingredients seemed to be leaning toward growing something…”

“Oh?” One bushy eyebrow rose above half moon spectacles. “Growing what, I wonder…’

“We… well, Rowena found that out too, sir.” Issobell stepped forward, resting the very heavy, very old, very dusty tome in her hands on Dumbledore’s desk and opening it to the correct page. “It’s a—“

“Mirifio crystal. Yes…” Dumbledore turned the book around. “I have fond memories of growing a small one in my youth and casting Aguamenti at it. The entire neighborhood was unfortunately flooded.”

“Well, sir I think perhaps we’d be looking at something far worse than flooding if the death eaters manage this.” Rowena stepped forward again. “And I seriously doubt that the crystal they’re attempting to grow will be anything even remotely resembling ‘small’.”

“I would think our definition of small would differ greatly from Bellatrix Lestrange’s indeed.” Dumbledore stared out over his glasses at the girls. “I do appreciate your work, ladies. You have been extremely helpful. Now I would like to impress upon you the importance of staying away from the Quidditch finals. I would say the same to Misses Haverty and Ironmonger as well given the chance.” Neither girl bothered arguing their intentions. No doubt Dumbledore saw their plan coming and knew, no matter what he told them, they’d be there. “You have done what is required of you. No more is needed from you.”

“I’m not so sure, sir.” Issobell lifted her chin a little, obviously gearing up for a fight. Rowena was pretty sure it was a sign she’d spent far too much time with Snape.

Dumbledore studied them both. “It is my duty to my students here to keep them safe, ladies. It is a duty I take very seriously.” Issobell and Rowena both slouched a little under such a statement. “However, that being said… I would never wish to stand in the way of someone doing what they feel they must do.”

Both girls gave sharp nods and quiet ‘yes sirs’ before being dismissed and hurrying back toward their common rooms. Rowena made Issobell repeat everything back to her before they parted ways so that Azalea and Hyacinth would get the right information.

“Oh my, not racing in at the last possible moment?” Azalea laughed from one of the couches as Issobell made her way through the common room. “What drove the Ravenclaw from the library nest?”

Hyacinth smiled. “Draco’s over there, so she’s not in the Room of Requirement either.”

“We figured it out.” Issobell flopped down between them. “Well, Rowena figured it out. I had to go to Dumbledore’s office for the ride, apparently.” She rolled her eyes. “He knows what we’re doing, by the way.”

“Of course he knows.” Hyacinth shook her head. “I’d be worried if he didn’t.”

“Yeah, well…” Issobell frowned. “I think we kind of, sort of got his blessing on all this. In that really Dumbledore kind of way, anyway.”

“So he talked in circles until you were dizzy then?” Azalea leaned forward, setting her copy of the Prophet in the table in front of them before speaking again. “Maybe we should go upstairs? I mean, if you have anything to tell us…”

“Yeah, good idea.” Issobell led the way up to their room which was thankfully uninhabited. Issobell repeated word for word what Rowena told her about the crystal and what it could do.

Azalea fell back against her bed post and Hyacinth sat on her bed. “… Wow.”

“Yeah, that’s what Rowena said too.” Issobell tucked her feet up under her on her own bed.

“If… oh man, if they get a curse off at that thing…” Azalea’s thoughts seemed to be chasing each other too quickly around her brain to actually make it out of her mouth in any constructive way. “We have to stop this.”

“Dumbledore told us we’d done enough.” Issobell shrugged as both of the other girls stared at her.

“Then why are we here? If this doesn’t have something to do with why…” Azalea took a deep breath. “You just nodded and smiled about that right? You’re not backing out are you?”

“No, I’m not backing out. I agree with you!”

“Okay then.” Hyacinth held up a hand to ward off the oncoming fight. “I guess then all we have to do is… wait.”

excellent work, hon. i know this has been such a pain for you to get done but i think you've done an admirable job!

Dumbledore is ever Dumbledore, isn't he? "You aren't allowed to do it, but if you slip out when I'm not looking, I won't say anything about it." nosy old goat.

truly excellent work. i look forward to more and seeing just how the girls solve this. and all the stuff that comes.

Great to see a new chapter. I thought you really caught Dumbledore's character. I could almost see and hear him like he was right in front of me. Great work. Really looking forward to seeing more.
