MSV: Final Fantasies Revealed Index

Edea sat on the porch of the orphanage, enjoying the quiet night, the music of the nocturnal insects like a lullaby her mother sang to her when she was younger.  It had been a very busy day, and she knew it wasn't over yet.  She still had one more stranger to hide, and it didn't surprise her at all that the man taking MacKenzie under his wing was late.  It was just like him to keep her waiting, just his little way of letting her know he was doing her a favor.

In truth, she was surprised that he had agreed to help out as easily as he did.  All she had to say was "please," and he said he'd be there.  It wasn't what she had expected out of him, not when she took into account their past.  Ever since the war had ended, he'd been a loaner, never bothering with making amends or healing old friendships.  His joy came from his ship and fishing, not the company of others.  Edea couldn't blame him for any of it, even if she wished it were different.

Edea sat there and rocked back and forth in her chair, thinking about the man, wishing there was something she could do to make his life easier.  The rumor mill had it that he wasn't even bothering to seek out companionship of the feminine kind, and that was so out of character for him, it was frightening.  He had never been without a lady friend from the time he had hit puberty, and he was never in any port longer than it took to take on supplies and sell his catch.

"If you think too much, Matron, your brains'll leak out your ears."

"It's always good to see you, Seifer."  Edea said as she continued to rock.  Her ex-knight was getting better at sneaking up on people.  She hadn't even felt him coming, and that was not a good thing.  Either he had learned how to completely shield his magical signature, or - she couldn't think of anything else that would fit the bill.

Seifer leaned down and kissed Edea on the cheek before sitting in the rocking chair next to hers.  "And it's always nice to see you, Sorceress."

Edea felt saddened by the contempt she heard in Seifer's voice.  He had been through just as much during the war as any of her other children, the only difference being the side of the war he had been on - her side of the war, to begin with.  It wasn't just her mind Ultimecia had possessed during the war.

"You're still hurting, Seifer.  Perhaps if you talked to someone?"

"If that's what you asked me here for, you can forget it.  I learned a long time ago to keep my confidences to myself," Seifer said as he got up.  Edea's hand on his halted his steps, and the utter torment in his eyes as he looked down on her sent her heart skidding in her chest before he lowered the shutters on his soul.

"Of course it isn't, I just wanted to remind you that I'm here if you need me,"  Edea said.  "Come with me, and I'll show you what I need from you."

Edea rose gracefully and walked through the sleeping orphanage to the room where Ladydeathfaerie still slept, stopping in the doorway.  Seifer looked over her shoulder at the woman sleeping on the cot and felt his heart stop.

"Oh, shit," Seifer said, his look of surprise not something one usually saw on his face.  "I think you need to explain this one, Matron."

He took Edea by the arm and half-dragged her to her office, pushed her inside gently, and closed the door behind him.  No matter how angry he was with the woman who raised him, he still held to his personal code of ethics and pulled his physical actions.  He took a deep breath before turning irate baby blues on the woman who stood calmly across from him.  "Are you insane?"

"No, I am not insane, and neither are you."

Edea sat behind her desk and felt a sense of accomplishment.  If anyone would be able to feel what she was feeling it would be Seifer, or possibly Squall.  "You felt it, too?"

"Of course I felt it!" Seifer yelled, his feet carrying him back and forth across the floor.  "How could I not feel it?  And you brought it into your house.  Edea, how could you do this?"

"I did it because if you look past that feeling you'll notice that it's just a skin, not alive, and not a threat - yet.  These people are good at heart, not evil."

Seifer slumped into the chair, his hand massaging his temple as if he had a headache.  "Neither were we, if you remember correctly, and it still happened.  What do you want me to do?"

"I want you to take her with you, keep her safe until we can figure out what to do about it.  The other three are already on their way to safe houses."  Edea said as she walked around her desk and stood in front of Seifer.  "I'm asking you to take MacKenzie because, out of all of them, she had the strongest feeling, the most power.  I sent the one with almost as much power to Squall."  Edea chuckled, knowing that comment more than anything else would get Seifer to do what needed to be done.  "As a matter of fact, the difference in the power levels is nominal."

"The other ones?  Holy Hyne, how many are there?" Seifer said, his eyes almost popping out of his head as the full extent of what Edea was saying became known.

Seifer actually looked scared for the first time in Edea's memory of him.  "There are four: three women and one man."

"And you scattered them to the four corners of the planet.  Why?"

"Because each of them have the same kind of patch on their souls.  I don't want to take a chance of them being together.  Things might happen that we can't control, and I don't want to have to deal with that until we have some answers.  Do you?"

Seifer sat there for a while, thinking about what it would mean to bring the redheaded woman onboard his boat and what would happen if he didn't.  That wasn't something he wanted to even think about.  If what he felt was right, leaving the woman where she was might start another war, and he, for one, wasn't willing to travel down that road again if he could help it.

There were some parts of the world where he was still considered a war criminal for his actions during the conflict ten years ago, even if he had been cleared of all wrongdoing by every court on the planet.  His conscience wasn't about to let him just walk away.

"If you don't want them together, why did you have them in the same room?"  Seifer asked.

"They were under a sleep spell that only I could break.  You don't think I would jeopardize my children, do you?"  Edea almost sounded hurt that Seifer would even consider her doing something so stupid.

"There's more to this than just hiding her, isn't there?"  He asked, his eyes fixed solidly on his booted feet.

"Yes, as a matter of fact, there is.  I need you to teach her how to use the powers she has gained.  It would be dangerous for everyone involved if these four didn't get a handle on them."

Edea knew she was winning him over, but she thought that had really happened the moment he saw MacKenzie.  It wouldn't take much more coaxing to get the young man on his way.

"Fine, let's get this over with," Seifer said, standing up so fast he forced Edea back against the desk.  "I'll do your little babysitting job, but don't expect me to play nice."

"Of course not, dear," Edea said through a secret smile.  Something told her that those two were going to make fireworks that would rival Esthar's yearly gala once they realized they didn't have to kill each other.

Edea and Seifer walked back to the room where MacKenzie lay, Seifer bringing up the lead.  Even then, he acted like a Sorceress's knight, always on the lookout for danger.

Edea brushed past him and bent over MacKenzie, whispering in her ear, the young woman's eyes blinking open, a confused look on her face.

"Where am I?"  Ladydeathfaerie said as she sat up slowly, her hands on either side of her head as if she were trying to keep it on her shoulders.  "And do you have any aspirin?"

"I don't know about aspirin, but I can help you with what pain you may have," Edea said as she stepped back, a blue sparkling light enveloping Ladydeathfaerie before sinking into her body.  "Does that feel better?"

"I guess it does, but would you mind telling me what the fuck you just did to me?"  Lady said as she got to her feet and backed away from the shorter woman.  She didn't know what was going on, but she was sure she wouldn't like it.

"I all I did was cast a cure spell," Edea replied, shrugging off the profanity.  She had raised enough children not to let it bother her.  "And now I want to talk to you.  If you would please follow me, MacKenzie?"

Seifer stepped forward and took Ladydeathfaerie by the arm.  She shook his hand off after giving him a disdainful look.  "I can walk on my own, thank you very much."

She wondered why the woman would call her by that name, and decided that, if she were in the middle of another Mary Sue Virus, she would just roll with it - after finding out her whole name, of course.  For the time being, MacKenzie would do.  She had always had an affinity for that name, and that little fact would make it a lot easier.

Edea led the little group outside and down the hill to the beach where Seifer had his boat docked.  "I know this is a lot to take in, MacKenzie, but I need you to go with Seifer.  It's not only vital to your safety, but ours as well."

Seifer - that name was familiar to her.  She remembered Leonhart29 speaking of him often, she knew he was one of those amoral bad guys most of her friends tried to warn her away from, and she was going to be alone with him.  Oh joys of joys.

"You want me to go with him on that?"  MacKenzie said as she pointed between the man and the boat.

"The boat's seaworthy, and I'm a damned good sailor.  You don't have to worry about that, and don't dis my boat, got it?"  Seifer said, his voice only slightly this side of being rude.  The woman was beautiful, but she had a mouth on her that might rival his own.

"Fine, so it's seaworthy.  How are we supposed to get to it? Swim?"  MacKenzie wasn't giving an inch.  That is, once she didn't think her head was going to unscrew itself from her neck and run off with the Headache Fairy.

"Keep it up and you will," Seifer growled.  The woman was going to be more trouble than he'd had in ages, and he was looking forward to it.  A good spar, be it verbal or physical, was always welcome in his book.

MacKenzie smiled.  "I look forward to it, big boy.  Now -" She turned to Edea as she spoke. "- would you be so kind as to tell me what my whole name is?  Something tells me there's more to it than just MacKenzie."

Edea gave a belly laugh for the first time today before answering.  "MacKenzie Brighid Fitzpatrick to be exact.  At least, that's the name you gave me when you first washed up on my beach."

Edea truly wished she could watch those two go after each other.  Something told her, call it a little birdie on her shoulder, that they would either kill each other or end up in the bunk within a week, tops.

LOL Wow, "MacKenzie" is far calmer than I thought she'd be. Can't wait to see the sparring kick into full gear.

It's a great chapter hun! Glad to see a little more about this spot on us... hmm... I'm not a fan of evil stains on my soul. *grumble* ;)

Oh no...Not another bad boy!

That boat might not be seaworthy by morning with "Mackenzie" aboard.

*giggle*

Good chapter. I'll be looking forward to more.

Oh...And so far I'm liking FF8, I'm just limited on playing time. Pesky things like work and sleep...oh and spawn...get in the way.

I'd sort of come to conclusion that these early battles were intended as a sort of tutorial and a chance to stock up on spells before things got serious.

I played for about 4 hours straight yesterday...Fresh out of the package.

Mmm...And I'm all for tying her to her bunk...Don't worry too much about any complaining. Trust me, she likes it. *snicker*
