Roxxy kept spinning the ring on her finger. It had become a nervous habit since Henry had given it to her. And she was nervous. She’d come into the city to have lunch with Haley, who was less the mobile at that point. She was seven months pregnant, and that did tend to slow most women down. That didn’t mean that the redhead had to like it though.

Lunch hadn’t been her only motivation for coming into the city though. Something she felt she had to settle, that she had to put to rest before she truly entered the next stage of her life, had found her in the back of a cab asking the driver to take her to Hell’s Kitchen. She’d gotten an interesting look for that.

It hadn’t taken long to find the law offices of Murdock & Nelson. A blonde secretary ushered her into an empty office. “Mr. Murdock will be back in a bit, if you don’t mind waiting.”

“Thank you.” Roxxy spun the ring again, looking curiously around the room. She nearly jumped when she heard the door creak open.

“Thanks, Karen.” Matt’s voice filled the room a moment before the door closed. “Wow, you are the last person I expected to find here.” There was a certain unease in his voice.

“I… I wanted to apologize.” She spit the words out as quickly as she could manage. “I should have said something before you left the institute but… things were just so…”

“Rosemary, its okay.” He smiled. “You aren’t the first woman to disappear in the middle of the night on me.”

“Still. I should have… I don’t know, said something.” She let out a laugh. “You did buy me dinner and lunch after all.”

His laugh echoed hers. “How about I buy you another dinner. You can apologize all you want then.”

“I…” She started twirling the ring again. “It’s a very nice offer Matt, but…”

“When are you getting married?”

“What?”

“The ring.” He gestured toward her hand. “I could hear you spinning it.”

“Oh.” She blushed. “Right… with the…” she shook her head a little.

“Who’s the lucky guy?”

“You’ve met him actually. Henry McCoy.”

“He’s a very lucky man, Rosemary.” Matt smiled. “And your apology is accepted.”

“Thank you.” She sighed, a weight lifting from her shoulders.

“Matt,” the blonde secretary poked her head in the door. “Your two o’clock is here.” She smiled warmly and slipped back out.

Roxxy let a wry smile cross her face. “She likes you.”

“I hope so. I’d hate to be dating someone that couldn’t stand me.” He laughed. “It was good seeing you again, Rosemary.” He stood and moved around the desk.

“Next time perhaps we can avoid the whole end of the world part of it.” She took his hand.

“Well, if you ever need a lawyer…”

She laughed again. “I’ll know who to call.”

He wasn’t off somewhere else when it happened, as she had feared he would be. That fear had grown as time strolled on. Flashes of… well, she kept telling herself that none of that was real, that none of it applied, but she was still a little too uptight whenever he went anywhere too far away in those last months. But he was there, curled up beside her, his arms around her when it happened.

Later that morning, the calls went out, the institute became a flurry of activity and excitement. That energy would pass before the big event, but Haley had thought that it was nice that they were all so supportive. Or she would have, had she had the time to think about it.

Things had gone surprisingly smoothly. Hank had come into town to lend a hand, having been her doctor through the pregnancy. Roxxy, of course insisted on tagging along. She, and the rest of the team, along with Sue, Reed and Ben, lingered in the waiting room doing exactly what the room was designated to do. And they had plenty of waiting to do. Logan, Remy and Warren showed up with coffee, food and the essentials from time to time until the news finally came.

Haley was sure she’d never forget that moment. Exhaustion couldn’t rob her of those words. “It’s a boy.” Nor could it rob her of the pride and love that shone on Johnny’s face as he watched her hold their baby, their son for the first time.

He reached out, resting his hand on his little head. “He’s so tiny.” There was more reverence in Johnny’s voice that Haley would ever have believed before that moment.

She let out a soft laugh. “Easy for you to say.” Her eyes blinked slowly, the adrenaline finally giving out, but she couldn’t take her eyes off the little bundle in her arms. “You should go tell everyone.”

“They can wait.” He smiled and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

“Isn’t that what they have been doing?”

“Then they can wait a little longer.” A small cooing noise from the bundle widened her smile.

“So, a name might be a good idea.” Johnny’s hand moved slowly over the baby’s head again. “You want to stick with…”

“Yeah.” She lifted her gaze to her husband. “Yeah, I think it’s perfect.”

Once she actually fell asleep, she didn’t wake up until sunrise the next day. She blinked lazily, stretching a little and taking in the room. Her eyes fell last on the profile near the window. The sunshine that was started to creep over the horizon spilled over the two of them as Johnny whispered to his son. She knew what he was saying. He’d wondered more times than not during her pregnancy if he’d be enough, if he’d be able to be a good father. She’d assured him over and over again, but he simply stated that he hadn’t really had the best role model for it.

So the whispered words were his promise to the little boy. His promise to be there, no matter what. His promise to do everything he could for him. His promise to be a better father than the one he’d had.

He’d keep each and every promise he made to that little boy. She knew it. She felt it in his love for the baby, and for her. A soft smile crossed her face.

“Hey kiddo, look who’s awake.” The worry and fear that had threaded thinly through him seemed to vanish when their eyes locked. He moved toward her bed, sitting on the edge and bouncing their baby gently. “How you doing?”

She sighed. She was still tired. “I’m good.” She reached out, taking the boy in her arms. “And what were my boys talking about?” She smiled at Johnny.

“Oh, you know… cars, girls… apparently there’s a cute one a few bassinets over in the nursery.”

“Oh, she’s in trouble, isn’t she, little one?” the only answer she got was a decidedly gigantic yawn and a snuggle that suggested someone was hungry. Once she got him settled into his meal, she turned back to Johnny.

He had a distinctly amazed look on his face. “You are incredible, you know that?” His eyes fixed on the boy in her arms.

“You helped.” She smiled, reaching out with her free hand to press it against his cheek. “We did this. It wasn’t all me.”

“Yeah, you just get the really fun parts of the job.” He turned his head, kissing her palm. “He’s amazing.”

“That he is.” She felt the tickle of fear again from him. “Johnny, look at me.” She took hold of his chin and brought his eyes to hers. “You are a wonderful man, and you are going to be a wonderful father. There isn’t a doubt in my mind.”

“That makes one of us.”

“No one gets an owner’s manual with their kid, handsome.” She stared down at the bundle in her arms. “We’ll just do the best we can.”

He chuckled, his hand moving over the soft blonde fuzz that covered his son’s head. “Hear that, Spencer? Mommy and Daddy have no idea what they’re doing.”

Haley laughed. “We’ll figure it out, I’m sure.” She sighed, staring out the window for a moment. “Pass me the phone, please.”

Johnny’s brow crinkled a little. “Everyone’s here, babe…”

“I know. Pass me the phone.” She was dialing a second later, her eyes fixed on their son as she listened to the rings.

“Hello?”

“Professor?”

“Haley? Dear, I’m sure you have far more important things to be doing right now.” The concern in his voice made her smile.

“Everything’s fine Professor. But I need to speak to you about something.”

“Now?”

“Yes.” She rocked her baby for a moment. “It’s about that suspension you mentioned after…”

“Haley we can discuss that…”

“Now, Professor.”

“I take it you’ve made a decision about whether or not you are coming back then.”

“I have.” She smiled down as Spencer yawned. “I can’t very well quit after all the work I’ve put in. What kind of example would that be setting for my son?”

“A very good point. The suspension will be a month.”

“Fine. I’ll see you in seven months then.” She frowned a little. “But a few things are going to have to change.”

“Such as?”

“My team gets the same treatment as everyone else. No more of this junior member crap.”

“It was never my intention to…”

“Professor, whoever’s intention it was, it’s been happening for far too long.”

“I will see to it that Scott is aware of that.” There was a faint note of humor in the older man’s voice. “How is the baby?”

“He’s perfect.” Her smile widened.

“I had heard there was some name debate. I take it you and your husband came to an agreement.”

She laughed. “Not really a debate. I just didn’t want to stroke his ego too much.” She tucked the phone against her shoulder and smacked Johnny’s arm. He gave her a confused, mock-hurt look and scooped the baby out of her arms. “I gave up in the end.”

“So Jonathan then?”

“Spencer Jonathan. Had to give the kid a fighting chance.”

A soft laugh came through the phone. “I look forward to meeting him.”

“Right up until he ends up in your ethics class, right?”

“We can always hope he takes after his mother.”

“Professor, was that a joke?” She laughed. “So, seven months.”

“Enjoy it.”

“It’s a suspension. I’m not supposed to enjoy it.”

“Consider it extended maternity leave.” She could almost hear him smile on the other end of the line. “I am very happy for you, Haley.”

She lifted her gaze to Johnny. He had Spencer against his chest; the newborn was starting to doze and had his head down on his father’s shoulder. Johnny’s head was tipped and resting against the baby, his eyes closed and a look of complete contentment on his face. She felt her heart swell. Nothing could ever touch that feeling, she was sure of it. No matter what the world threw at them, they’d have moments like this one. Perfect little spans of time where they didn’t have to be heroes to anyone but Spencer. “I’m pretty happy for myself too, actually.”

I think I've got baby fever again. I'm missing that new baby smell. Not the stinky diaper one...you know the one. Sigh...

Lovely wrap up. Now if I could only finish something. ;)

Lovely wrap-up, hun. Absolutely lovely.

The bit with Matt was an unexpected treat. And what a way to bait me - lol! One of these days I'll get around to that story - I promise.

And I know exactly what you're going to do with yourself next; you're going to start working on the next generation. ;D

Doom tends to do that. lol

You were totally baiting. LOL But in a good way. ;D And since I only have vague ideas at this point, there isn't much you could mess up.

Well, at lest Roxxy has a reason for breeding like a bunny.
