MSV: Final Fantasies Chapter Index

Edea hurried Ceres onto the waiting transport, urging her up the gangplank of the small helicopter effectively transferring the care of her guest to a young woman in a white uniform.  Ceres knew who it was and what the uniform meant.  She was being handed over to Edea's SeeD, her own elite mercenary force, and unless she was sadly mistaken, she would be transferred to their ship in short order.

"You know where she needs to go.  Avoid everyone and get there as fast as you can."

Edea handed a letter in a sealed envelope to the woman as she spoke, "and give this to him when you get there, then get back here as soon as possible."

The young woman took the envelope and snapped a sharp salute before taking Ceres by the arm.   She gently but firmly steered her inside the vehicle with a stern look.  Ceres thought about making a scene, just long enough to make it plain that she wasn't some kind of thoughtless puppet, but she just couldn't find the energy.  At the moment, she felt like the walking dead, and all she wanted was a nice soft bench she could lay down on and take a nap.

Edea stood on the beach and watched as the airship sped away, staying where she was until it was no more than a distant memory on the horizon.

"Hyne be with you, Ceres.  You're going to need all the help you can get."  After sending up that small prayer to her ancestor, she turned and walked back to the orphanage to await the rest of the transports for the other three strangers.

There was something strange about each of them.  None of them belonged; that, she was certain of.  She had been able to talk to one of them and felt the power radiating off of her.  All that had done was given her the knowledge that something bad was headed her way.

Edea settled behind her desk and leaned back in her leather chair, pondering about each of the newcomers.  Ceres made her skin crawl, though she didn't know why.  It wasn't the woman or her personality that did it; it was more like an oily skin that covered a small portion of the woman's soul, something that shouldn't be there.

She stood up and walked sedately back into the room where the other three were slumbering unnaturally.  Edea pulled up a straight-backed chair and studied each of them in turn, closing her eyes and looking at them for the first time with what could be termed her "third eye".  What she found didn't make her feel any better, or any safer.

Each had the same type of oily patch on their souls, and she knew instantly that it was something new, not what they had wished for or welcomed.  Their souls were good, some a bit darker with pain than others, but good nonetheless.  The patch was foreign, evil, and asleep.  Edea didn't even want to think what would happen if it ever woke up.

She could tell without a doubt that they didn't belong here.  None of them were from this world; it was as if when they washed up on her beach that they had just formed from the sea foam.  She had a very bad feeling about all of it, and she didn't know what to do about any of it.  All she did know was that she needed to keep them safe, keep how they came to her a secret, not only for their safety, but for hers as well.

"Matron?"  A small child entered the room and called out softly to the only mother he'd ever known.

"Yes, child?"  Edea opened her eyes, but continued to stare at the new arrivals as she spoke.

"There's a huge flying machine outside, and there's a funny man with a tattoo on his face to see you."

The boy smiled back at Edea when she gave him a hug before standing.  "Then we need to go greet him, don't we?"  Edea ushered the boy out of the room and went outside to meet with one of her former charges.

Edea walked outside and was immediately swept up into a huge hug.  She giggled like a schoolgirl as the man twirled her around before kissing her on the cheek and setting her down.

"You needed my help, Matron?" He said, suppressing the urge to sweep her up for another hug.

"Thank you for coming so quickly, Zell.  Did you have a problem getting permission to use Ragnarok?"  Edea couldn't stop smiling.  Her little crybaby Zell was all grown up, a very handsome young man, and he had broken quite a few female hearts around the world when he finally admitted he wasn't looking for a lifelong relationship.  She just wished he'd find someone nice to settle down with eventually.

"Nah, Quistis was cool with it.  I only had to sign the 'I will not wreck the air ship' papers in quadruplicate."  He winked at her as he started dancing around and punching an imaginary opponent while he spoke.  "So where is this guy I'm supposed to pick up?"

Edea motioned for him to follow her into the house, speaking quietly as she went, "Zell, I don't have to worry about you picking any fights with this one, do I?"  Edea knew he wouldn't do anything consciously, but Rishou was a very good-looking man in his early to mid-twenties, and he seemed to be more or less the type of man Zell usually fought with.  He was strong, and she was sure he could handle himself, so she was hoping the two men wouldn't rub each other the wrong way.

"I can't promise anything, Matron.  You know how I work, but I'll try my best not to get too smitten with the thought of a new sparring partner."  Zell's comment was self-effacing and laced with a small bit of humor.

"Just guard your heart, and guard him with your life.  That's all I ask.  He's more important than he realizes," Edea whispered as they entered the small room, wondering if Zell would catch the small innuendo.  She was one of the few people who knew which side of the fence Zell tended to graze, even if he himself was confused on that point more times than not.  She walked over to where Rishou lay and bent over to whisper much the way she had done with Ceres.  "Rise and shine, sleepy head."

Rishou's eyes snapped open, and he leapt out of bed like he had been faking his slumber, just waiting for the right moment to spring out at them.  His deep blue eyes were wide and as big as saucers as he backed up into a corner, his hand searching for a weapon at the belt that held his black and blue kimono closed.

"If you are looking for the sword you came here with, you will get it back as soon as I'm sure you're sane," Edea said, her steely voice back in force.  "I know you are confused, but, if you'll follow me, I'll explain what I can."

Rishou, formerly known as Samuraiter, straightened up, pulled his kimono closed, and followed them out of the room, looking at his roommates out of the corner of his eye.  He recognized Dazzledfirestar and Ladydeathfaerie, but there was another cot, an empty cot, and he began to wonder who had been lying there.  The feeling he got from the space was familiar, but, then again, all of it was familiar.  He knew where he was, who was leading him out of the room, and he wasn't very happy about any of it.

"Please, take a seat," Edea waved him into one of the two guest chairs in the room as she spoke.  "I would like you to go with Zell; can you do that without making a fuss?"

"Madam, a Samurai does not make a fuss," Samuraiter intoned, his eyes never leaving Edea's face.  "If I must go, I must go."

This reply took her aback slightly, and she began to wonder just what was going through his mind.

"While you are here, you will be called Rishou Souhei.  Is that to your liking?"  Edea smiled benignly as she gave him his new name, watching him all the while.

Rishou nodded before saying, "It is what I'm called on occasion, and will be acceptable."  He looked over at Zell as he spoke, "Am I to leave with him immediately?" He tried to keep the bitterness out of his voice, but didn't quite succeed.

"I would like you to, yes.  It is very important that we get you all to safety."  Edea once again smiled as she told Rishou what was expected of him.  She knew instantly that she wouldn't have any trouble with him.  "You'll be going to Balamb Garden, and I've arranged for some training for you.  Zell will be more than happy to provide that."

"Booya!" Zell cracked his dragon skin-covered hands as his voice exploded. "I'll train you up so good you won't know what to do with yourself, dude."

Rishou just sat there with a small smile on his face.  He was sure he would give Zell a run for his money.  Zell used his fists, while Rishou used his wit and sword.  As far as he was concerned, it was no contest, though he did stop long enough to remind himself not to underestimate the tattooed wonder sitting next to him.

"Do you have any questions for me?" Edea asked him, wondering at the smile and suddenly feeling very bad for Zell.

"Where is Leonhart?"  It had come to him in a flash, the other person, the one who was missing.  He knew her quite well, and it irked him that it took him so long to figure out who it had been.

Zell and Edea shared a quick look over the desk.  This was an unexpected surprise.

"Squall Leonhart is currently in Winhil.  Why do you ask?"  Edea wasn't too happy about giving that little snippet of information away, but she had promised to give him answers.

"No, not Commander Leonhart, I meant the other woman who was with us." Rishou was getting the feeling he shouldn't have spoken.

"You mean Ceres?  She's going some place safe, and I'm afraid I can't give you much more than that.  Why do you call her Leonhart?"  Edea was becoming concerned.  The woman hadn't given her name before she shipped her off, and, if that was truly her name, things were going to be very interesting, not to mention a bit awkward.

"That's the name I knew her by where we come from," Rishou chuckled when it finally hit him why the comely woman was looking so worried, and why Zell looked like he had just crapped his pants.  "I wouldn't worry about it; there is no possibility of a familial relation between those two."

This is a good thing.  That guy has enough trouble with family coming out of the woodwork," Zell spoke before engaging his mouth yet again, but one look at Edea's grin let him know that - that time at least - his mouth hadn't gotten him into more trouble than he could get himself out of.

"I take it I'm to leave before the other two wake up, and, if that's the case, don't you think we should get going?"  Rishou was keen to get on with his adventure.  This was so much better than the cosplay he had been going to when he passed out.  It wasn't play-acting; it was for real.

"No time like the present, then.  Quistis wants the Ragnarok back before dark if we can swing it."  Zell bounced up as he spoke, his voice doing a little jog as he danced in place.

"Quistis?"  Rishou kept the excitement out of his voice, but that didn't stop his internal "oh boy" meter from going off the charts.  Now there was a woman!  She was beautiful, wielded a whip, and was hard as nails.  What he wouldn't give to "spar" with her.

"Yes, Quistis.  She's the head instructor at Garden, and, if you're lucky, you might even get a glimpse of her when she doesn't have her head buried in a book, class or sleeping."  Zell started dancing out of the room, doing a back flip to the excitement of the few kids that were hanging about.  He didn't think he was showing off for the new guy; it was just how he was.

Rishou shook his head and stood up, extending his hand to Edea.  "Thank you for your hospitality, great lady."  He bent over her hand as he spoke and placed a small kiss on the back of it to punctuate his speech.

"It was what I had to do.  Be careful, Rishou Souhei.  Learn all you can, and be as prepared as you can be for what is to come." Edea smiled as she spoke, but it didn't reach her eyes.  She had a feeling that, before all of it was done, one or all of her guests might end up hurt ... or worse.
