Sunday night was slowly drawing to a close. Issobell yawned dramatically, curled up on a couch in the Slytherin common room. She was very happy to be out of the library. It felt like she’d spent far too much time there of late. She pouted a little. Between actually getting her homework done, and having Rowena drag her to the library every moment she could Issobell hadn’t gotten half the lazing around done that she’d planned on for her week off. She sighed. At least Severus had been more than attentive the last few days. She tipped her herbology textbook toward her, hiding the grin that crept across her face. Despite all that, she was looking forward to her friends coming back. She had very little doubt that they would have much to tell.
She was brought out of her thoughts by a crackling noise and a flash of bright green flames from the hearth. Azalea stepped out a moment later, clutching a small bag of clothes. “Hey!” Issobell stood, abandoning her textbook on the coffee table. “Welcome back.”
“Thanks.” Azalea sat on the couch, slumping slightly. Her voice wasn’t nearly as animated as normal. Before Issobell could say anything about it, the hearth flared again, and Hyacinth joined them. Both her friends looked tired, and somehow older.
“What happened?” Issobell asked tentatively. Hyacinth and Azalea looked at each other for a moment, before Azalea got up off the couch.
“I need to get some sleep.” She said quietly as she headed toward the dorm room.
Hyacinth sighed heavily. “We’ll tell you about it later… I don’t really want to repeat it all again for Rowena…” She hissed as she leaned back against the couch. “Once will be enough.”
Issobell frowned. Her imagination was running wild with thoughts of what could cause this sort of behavior in her friends, but she knew that pushing for information would more than likely get her no where. One question however would not wait. “Is everyone…”
Hyacinth sighed again, and pushed herself off the couch. “Nobody’s dead. We’ll talk about it in the morning. I think I’m going to take a long hot bath before bed.” With a wave, she headed toward the dorm to collect her robe, leaving Issobell alone again.
Hyacinth collected her things quickly. Azalea had closed the drapes around her bed, and obviously didn’t feel like company, so Hyacinth let her be, hurrying through the room and down to the common room and eventually, out to the prefect’s bathroom. Azalea had heard the password from Draco ages ago in a quidditch practice, and had passed it on to the others. In no time, the gigantic tub was full of warm water and soothing purple bubbles that smelled vaguely of lavender. Her back felt better as soon as she slipped under the water. She sighed heavily, resting her head on a towel, folded up on the edge of the tub and letting the heat and the soft scent of the bubbles that were now floating around the ceiling calm her tense muscles. She barely heard the click of the door closing behind her. In fact, she was sure she’d imagined it until he spoke.
“Bath helping, is it?”
She shot out of the water and wrapped the nearby towel around herself. “Merlin! Draco, don’t you knock?” She took a few deep breaths to calm herself. “And why would you care if my bath is helping anyway?” Her brow crinkled.
He shrugged, leaning casually against the frame of the stalls, though the look on his face was anything but casual. “I always knew my family was… darker than most.” He sighed. “I just didn’t think they’d turn on their own.” He looked at her for a moment, noting the confused look on her face. “I’m new to this being concerned thing, alright.”
She couldn’t help but let out a bit of a laugh. “You’re concerned about me?”
He shrugged again. “You are important to Rowena. She’s important to me. What happened to you…” He let his voice trail off, sensing she didn’t want to talk to him about it. “What I mean is, if you and Haverty can…” He sighed, fighting to find the right words. “I know now that I can’t protect Rowena from any of this, and I wanted to know if…”
“Draco,” Hyacinth sighed heavily. “I’m not the one you should be talking to about this. But, if it helps, despite what happened, I still love George, and I’m fairly sure Azalea still loves Oliver. Just do your best to keep her safe and she’ll understand.” She pulled the towel up a bit. “Now, if you don’t mind.” She motioned toward the tub.
“Right… yeah, of course.” He moved quickly, as if she’d just shaken him awake. “Sorry… I… right… thanks.” With that he moved out of the door, leaving Hyacinth to hope for a peaceful bath.
The next morning, Issobell and Rowena waited patiently for the other girls to bring up what had happened. Rowena shifted uncomfortably, Dumbledore’s words still echoing in her head. Hopefully they will not regret that later on. From where she was sitting, his words seemed prophetic. Hyacinth flinched each time someone passed too close behind her, and Azalea had the look of someone who hadn’t slept in days. It was almost time to leave for Potions when Rowena finally plucked up some courage. “So… what happened?” Both girls looked at each other for a moment then as if they were one mind, the whole sordid story poured out. Rowena and Issobell sat, shocked, their mouths hanging open. “I…” Rowena searched for some words of comfort for her friends, but couldn’t find any.
“It’s okay.” Hyacinth spoke quietly as the girls gathered their things for class. “It’s over and done.” Azalea nodded in agreement, so Rowena and Issobell dropped the subject.
Potions was an unusually quiet class, but thankfully they were busy enough not to really mind. All four girls were intent on their Mandrake potion, or the petrified frog in front of them. Near the end of class, Professor Snape instructed them to brush the finished potion onto the skin of the frog. A few moments later, the room was filled with the feeble ribbits and croaks of the reanimated frogs, though it seemed a few of them were also de-aging. Everyone began to collect their things when Snape’s voice cut through the room. “Miss Haverty. Stay behind.”
Azalea’s already slumped shoulders dropped a little further. She couldn’t think of anything that she’d done wrong. Her potion had worked perfectly; in fact, her frog had hopped happily off the table a moment after it had been applied. She hadn’t said a word to anyone, which was what usually got her in trouble. She stood in front of Snape’s desk, waiting for the room to clear, so he could berate her for whatever she’d done.
“I owe you an apology, Miss Haverty.” His back was still turned to her as he put several vials into the store cupboard.
“You… what?” Her jaw had dropped. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She nearly dropped the books she was holding.
“I owe you an apology.” He turned to face her. “For Merlin’s sake, girl, close your mouth. You’ll attract bats.” She did as she was told, a small scowl forming on her face. “I had made a promise to someone, that I would do my best to keep you and Miss Ironmonger safe, and, in your case, I failed. For that I apologize.”
Azalea stood, silently trying to process what was happening. “Forgive me, sir, but…”
“You’re surprised? I expected as much.” He settled himself into the chair behind his desk.
“Well, yes.” She took a step closer to the desk. “To be honest sir, I… I thought you hated me.”
He sighed heavily, as if something he was about to say was incredibly distasteful to him. “Perhaps I have been a bit… harder on you, due to your Gryffindor connections.”
“My brother?” Her brow furrowed a little.
“Your lover, Miss Haverty.” He fixed his eyes on her. “I’d known for some time. You should really work on your emotional control, for a Slytherin, it really is embarrassingly bad.”
“Thank you, sir.” Her scowl grew slightly. “And apology accepted.” She turned on her heel and headed for the door, wondering, not for the first time, how Issobell ever put up with that man.

I liked the Snape apology, it was surprising and in a way amusing. But he managed to muddle his way through it, right?
And Draco with his worries, how sweet. I was a bit suprpised that he showed up in the prefects bathroom, but since he does have the password. . . .
looking forward to the next.

Yes, Severus did manage to muddle through... though I still think he needs some work on his people skills. lol
And, Draco... dear Draco... at least he's trying to be nicer. LOL
