Breakfast was a quiet affair for the girls the next morning. Hyacinth picked slowly at her grapefruit, Issobell munched thoughtfully at her toast, Rowena sipped her pumpkin juice, seemingly lost in her own head and Azalea poked sullenly at her oatmeal. Finally, apparently tired of playing with her food, Azalea spoke. “Anyone find anything out?”
They all stopped eating. Issobell took a sip of the tea that she had transfigured into coffee. “Nothing of any use to us.” She said with a sigh.
Issobell’s and Azalea’s eyes next landed on Hyacinth. “Not much.” She flicked a seed out of her grapefruit and across the table. “I got a bit… distracted.” Her cheeks flushed and she let out a bit of a giggle. “But whatever it is, it’s Dumbledore’s plan, and it’s dangerous. Life-risking kind of dangerous.” She sighed and resumed picking seeds out of her grapefruit.
“Oh wonderful. Because Dumbledore’s plans are always so easy to figure out.” Issobell rolled her eyes.
“Well,” Rowena set herself between Issobell and Azalea, “I hit the jackpot.” She set her glass on the Slytherin table and after taking a look around to make sure they weren’t being listened to she told them what Draco had told her. There was a long moment of quiet, as if they were all afraid to be the first to speak. Issobell and Azalea looked as if they had received horrible news that they had somehow been expecting. Issobell sipped absentmindedly from her cup and Azalea stared down at the table.
Hyacinth finally broke the silence. “What has he been doing?” The question seemed more to herself than to any of them, but she still looked to her friends for an answer. No one had one. “Why didn’t he tell me?” There was a touch of anger in her voice now.
“They’re trying to keep us safe.” Rowena said softly. “They don’t want us to get hurt.”
“Because losing them won’t hurt?” Hyacinth echoed the thought that was running through all of their heads, but again, no one had an answer. They all went quiet again as they contemplated the severity of their situation.
Finally, Rowena spoke, seemingly wanting to steer the subject away from her news. “Azalea?”
The redhead lifted her eyes from the table. “Yeah?”
“Are you alright?” Rowena’s brow crinkled slightly. “I heard you come in last night…” Azalea raised her eyebrows slightly and Rowena blushed. “We were on the couch.”
“Remind me not to sit there ever again, please.” Azalea shook her head. “I’m fine.” Rowena shot her a disbelieving look, and Issobell and Hyacinth didn’t seem convinced either. “I’m fine!” She repeated. “It was just… well…” she poked her spoon into her oatmeal again. “It was the same as always… fight, bitch, and…” She huffed slightly and dropped her spoon again. “It’s just that,” She let her eyes drift to the staff table. “I have this horrible feeling…”
“Hold it right there.” Hyacinth took Azalea’s hand from across the table. “Nothing’s going to happen. We’re going to make sure of that.” Hyacinth’s eyes locked with each of the others in turn. “We just need to get to the quidditch finals.” The others nodded in agreement.
“I can try my brother. I’m sure he’ll have tickets.” Azalea said slowly, brightening up slightly.
“Well, we should all try our families. From what Draco said, each of us should have the kinds of connections needed to get tickets.” Issobell finished the last bite of her toast and wiped the crumbs from her hands. “When are the finals anyway?”
“In about a month.” Azalea sighed again, and began collecting her things for class. “Which means…”
“We’re stuck here until then.” Issobell heaved her bag over her shoulder. “Wonderful. Think we can get out before we have to take our N.E.W.T.s?”
Rowena shook her head slightly and let a grin creep across her face. “I’d get studying if I were you.”
