The Mary Sue Virus - Chapter 49 - Change Comes
Holy shit... is that Draco there? Could it be? My gods, it's a new chapter of the Original MSV! I bet you all thought I'd given up. ;) Never, I tell you! I will never give up! Admittedly though, my HP muses have been quiet lately, which worried me. But they're back, and in fine form, I think anyway. :D So enjoy! Hopefully there will be more to come soon.

Rowena had deposited her shopping bags up in her room to be sorted out later. Somehow, she just didn’t have it in her when she arrived back at the castle. Her mind was back in the library, going through the list that Dumbledore had given her. She felt like the last piece of the puzzle was within reach, or close to being within reach. She felt like the answers were just a breath away. She sighed and moved unconsciously toward the library.
She took a deep breath as she entered the sanctum of books. The smell of aging parchment and leather calmed her nerves. She settled herself at a table near the potions section. She was sure that she’d, at the very least, skimmed nearly every book in there for the things the Death Eaters had ordered from George, finding nothing. There was nothing that she could find that contained all the elements they wanted. Then the light went on. Maybe… she nearly smacked her head on the table. How could she have been so stupid? She got up and moved quickly between the shelves, looking for something specific. She nearly jumped out of her skin when someone grabbed her shoulder. “You look like you’re on a mission.” Draco smirked.
“I…” she tried to catch her breath. “I think I’ve figured something out.” She turned from him, her eyes raking over the volumes. She began to speak again, as if to herself. “I’d been looking for one thing, one potion or spell that would include all the things Dumbledore told me about… but it’s not that simple. There must be at least three parts to all this.” Her brain would have made her house founder proud at that moment. Thoughts were flying through her head faster than a Firebolt. “Ah!” A smile popped onto her face as she reached for an especially big and dusty tome, pulling it down and carrying it to the table she’d staked out.
“Care to share what the hell you’re talking about?” Draco looked a little exasperated as he slumped into the seat across from her but she was too caught up in finding proof for her theory. “Rowena?”
“Yes, what? Sorry…” her cheeks flushed a little, partially because of the excitement of a new idea, and partially because of Draco. “This is important.”
“I don’t doubt that.” He sighed. For the first time she noticed the look of concern on his face. “So is this.” He pulled a small envelope from his pocket and placed it on the table. The wax seal held the Malfoy family crest. “It’s from my father.” The contempt in his voice took her slightly off guard. “Apparently, some how, word reached my parents that I was seeing someone.”
“What? How?” Rowena’s brow crinkled.
“I don’t know. Best I can figure, Goyle or Crabbe saw me meet you somewhere.” He shrugged. “But now they want to meet you.” He rubbed his eyes for a moment. “To ‘make sure I’ve made an intelligent choice’.” He shook his head. “They want me to bring you for dinner next weekend.”
Rowena’s eyes grew to the size of saucers. “Dinner… with… with your parents?” She couldn’t keep the small amount of fear out of her voice. “Why… why now? I mean… finals are coming up, and… and…” She tried to calm herself again, taking deep breaths.
“I don’t know.” He slid the letter over to her. “But it’s all in there. No room for arguments.”
She gingerly picked up the small envelope, as if it may burst into flames when she touched it. She opened it, pulling out the short letter and taking another deep breath before reading it.
Draco,
It has come to your mother’s attention that you have been spending time with a certain young lady. She was very hurt that she did not hear about this directly from you. I hope that your lack of openness is not a reflection on this girl.
Our friends have told us that she is not a Slytherin, but is indeed a pureblood. I suppose most of the Slytherin girls in your year are too entranced by the charms of another house for you to have found someone there. But their base choices are not the issue here. I am happy to hear that you’ve distanced yourself from that Parkinson girl. Slytherin or not, that girl was beneath you.
Your mother has insisted that you bring this new girl by for a dinner so that we can be assured that you have made an intelligent decision in this. I expect you and she here by 4pm this coming Saturday. I trust this will not be a problem for either of you. And I trust that she understands the importance of this interview. I will not accept some Weasley-esque fool in this family, Draco.
Sincerely Your Father,
Lucius Malfoy
Rowena gulped. Some of this had made her particularly nervous. “What does he mean ‘the importance of this interview’?” she knew of course what he’d meant, but she was hoping she’d misinterpreted. “Am I applying for a job?” a fair bit of scorn seeped into her voice.
Draco sighed. “In the eyes of my family, yes. You are applying to… well…” His cheeks flushed a little. She was shocked. Nothing, she thought, could embarrass Draco Malfoy. “You’re applying to help continue the great Malfoy line. And I’m sure you can understand that in the eyes of my father, that is a great honor, not to be bestowed on someone who is…” his voice dropped to a volume that she had to struggle to hear, “unworthy.”
“Oh.” Rowena’s eyes focused on the book in front of her. If she just focused on her mission, her work, maybe she could avoid this. But her Ravenclaw brain wasn’t going to allow that. “So… ummm…” A million questions popped into her head. “What do I need to know?”
“I’m sure your friends will be able to help with that better than I can.” Draco’s cheeks were completely inflamed by that point.
“Right.” She began flipping pages. “I should…”
“Right, of course.” He stood. “I just wanted to give you fair warning. I suppose this means that...” Grey eyes locked on dark ones. “We don’t have to sneak around anymore Rowena.”
This time her cheeks flushed. “I… I suppose not.” She hadn’t really thought about that. After all, they’d been sneaking around the castle for so long; she’d almost forgotten that he’d said that was going to be a temporary state of affairs. He leaned across the table, kissing her softly. A shocked noise from a few rows of shelves away, alerted them both the presence of Madam Pince. “I’ve got some work to do.” Rowena’s cheeks continued to burn.
“Yeah, well… I’ll see you later then.” His lips brushed against hers again and he moved quickly from the library, leaving Rowena to contemplate her mission, dinner with the Malfoys and her new status as the official girlfriend of the Slytherin Prince.
