Edea had just seen Ragnarok off when a calloused hand came to rest on her shoulder. She knew the man who belonged to the hand, and she was very happy to see him, even if it was under strained circumstances.
"Was that Zell?" the man said in a sweet drawl. Edea had forgotten how soothing his voice could be. Even as a child, he had the ability to calm people down just by speaking to them, and, if that didn't work, his gun did.
She turned around and chuckled when the man tipped his cowboy hat at her, his version of a bow. "Yes, it was. I'm glad you've come, Irvine." It was her turn to place a hand on his shoulder and usher him into her home.
"Your call sounded like it was urgent. I will admit that Selphie wasn't too happy about giving me leave to come, but - " Irvine said and shrugged it off as he took his cowhide duster from his shoulders, hanging it up on the coat tree in Edea's office.
"She still doesn't want you far from her sight, I take it?" Edea asked as she sat behind her desk, motioning for the third time that day for someone to take a seat. It was becoming a routine thing, but she hoped she would only have to do it once more.
"That's it in a nutshell, Matron. You know how Selphie is: Once she gets an idea in her head, nothing short of death will get rid of it."
Irvine sighed a bit dramatically as he sat down. The sigh was completely for show; the sad look in his eyes was not. "She still thinks that, if we're together twenty-four-seven, we'll get back together. I love her, Matron, I just can't be what she wants me to be."
"You two were never destined to be a life-long couple, Irvine," Edea said. She hated to say it, but, out of all of her "children," she thought Irvine and Selphie might be able to stay together. As it was, the rest of them had chosen to lead their own lives, either hiding from the world or immersing themselves so far into their work that they didn't have time to think about what they had gone through.
She had raised all five of them, seen them off to Garden to become SeeDs, and fought them when she was possessed by Sorceress Ultimecia. The pride she felt for each of them was so great that it was apparent when she spoke of them, and the love would always be there. She couldn't blame them for not wanting to continue their relationship with each other; the war had torn more than the landscape, it had torn them apart. With any luck, the strangers would find a way to heal old wounds and make them whole again.
Irvine slumped into the seat, his bare arms flexing unconsciously as he digested the conversation so far. Edea could tell that it was a subject he had been thinking on long and hard. It was one of the reasons why she had called him to take Abeni. The woman was pretty, and, judging by the indentation on her trigger finger, she shared one of Irvine's loves.
"I didn't really call you here to talk about your love life, though," Edea said, getting the conversation back on track. "Can you take one of our newcomers with you to Trabia Garden? Something tells me this one's going to need a little extra TLC, and we all know that you are one of the best when it comes to that."
Irvine sat there for a bit before answering. He had tried very hard to get rid of his "lady's man" reputation, and it seemed that Matron was banking on it being true. In the past, he had come off as a confident loaner who just so happened to chase skirts. It was his way of keeping everyone at a safe distance. Oh, he got his fair share of skirts, that's for sure, but he had only loved one woman, and that had turned out very badly. He was still trying to get out from under that relationship and not having any luck with it.
"I can only promise to protect this woman, but I've got to tell you, Matron, if you're thinking about matchmaking, I'll pass."
"I'm not matchmaking, Irvine. You're the best one for Abeni."
Irvine nodded and stood, his hat in his hands, his fingers worrying the brim. It was the only sign that the conversation had made him very uncomfortable. "Then lets get this show on the road. If I'm not back in a decent amount of time, Selphie'll send out every SeeD at her command."
Edea nodded a bit sadly and led Irvine to where the last two strangers slept. He stayed at the door and watched her as she bent over and spoke gently to one of the sleeping women in the room. Irvine took in everything about both ladies, noticing that not only were they both redheads, but they were both built for sin. He was about to ask Matron who was taking the other woman in when Abeni started yelling.
"Where the fuck am I? Who are you?" Daz all but fell out of the cot in her haste to get away from the woman standing over her. Either she was in another MSV, or her life just took a turn down Fucked-Up Avenue.
"Just calm down. Come with me, and I'll explain what I can," Edea stated calmly, talking to Daz in tones one would use to bring a child out of a nightmare without getting socked in the nose while doing it.
"I will not calm down! I don't know you people!"
Daz finally caught sight of Ladydeathfaerie laying on the other cot in the room, still as death. "What the hell did you do to her?" Daz said as she stared at LDF, finally giving a sigh of relief when the other woman's chest rose and fell with a breath. At least she wasn't dead; that was a small comfort.
"We haven't done anything but help her sleep. She will wake, just as you have. Now, if you'll please follow me?"
Edea approached the shaking woman and tried to take her by the arm, receiving a punch in the shoulder for her efforts.
"Whoa! I don't think you'll be doing that again."
Irvine had softly made his way into the room and had grabbed Daz around the waist, her arms caught between his and her waist. "Just calm down, Abeni. This isn't anything to get violent over." Irvine leaned in and whispered into Daz's ear, "And if you ever hit Matron again, I'll shoot you."
The threat of being shot was enough to get Daz to slump a bit. She hadn't meant to hurt the woman; it had been a knee-jerk reaction to being touched when she was freaking out. She should have been used to it: She had been thrown into so many different fandoms that she had lost count! It was different, though. She had no idea who those people were, where she was, and why there were only two of them stuck in that little game.
"You can let go of me now, I won't hurt anyone." Daz wiggled a little as she spoke, trying to get out of Irvine's grasp. Irvine must have thought she meant what she said, because he let her go, letting her turn around so she could see the person the deep drawl and threat had come from.
The man was easily six feet tall, had long auburn hair pulled back in a pony tail, and had violet eyes that held curiosity mixed with a bit of pain. Daz had to catch her breath: The man was beautiful - not handsome, beautiful. It was the only word that effectively described him.
There were men that could easily have been male or female, their androgynous looks such that one had to either hear them speak or see them naked to tell what their sex was. Daz didn't need to see him naked; she had felt all of the muscles when he held her to him, not to mention a very male part of his body against her backside.
"Please follow me," Edea said as she strode out of the room. She had known that at least one of them would come out of the sleep violently, but she had put her money on the only remaining person still asleep.
Irvine gestured for Daz to follow Edea and brought up the rear as soon as the woman started walking. Edea had given him one hell of an assignment, and he had a sneaking suspicion that Abeni was going to be quite a handful.
Instead of leading them to her office, Edea took them outside to the flower field. She was hoping an open area would make Abeni feel better about what was going to be said. It was also safer to everyone involved. She didn't want the children to see any more than they already had.
"Can I ask a question?" Daz finally found her calm "I'll be good" voice, and really needed one question answered.
"You can ask, and I'll try to answer," Edea stated as she stood knee deep in white, pink and purple flowers.
"What's my name, and where am I?"
"You are currently in my orphanage on the Centra Continent, and the name you gave me when you first washed up on the beach was Abeni Quade. Are you telling me you don't remember who you are?"
"I told you my name? Well, I guess my name's Abeni, then, but I don't know where I am, and Centra Continent doesn't tell me a thing." Abeni planted her hands on her hips as she spoke, her frustration with the situation showing in her body language. "Your name is Matron?"
Edea chuckled and smiled in a good-natured way. "My children call me Matron, you may call me Edea. The young man behind you is your bodyguard, Irvine."
Abeni turned around and regarded Irvine with a new interest. "My bodyguard? Why would I need a bodyguard?"
"Because you aren't where you're supposed to be, but there's a reason you're here. Irvine will be taking you to Trabia Garden to keep you safe until we can figure out what to do with the four of you," Edea said, her smile faltering.
"The four of us? But there was only one other in the room, so who are the other two?" Abeni asked as she swung back around to face Edea.
"The other two, Ceres and Rishou, have already left for new locations."
"You're splitting us up?" Abeni said, her mind swimming. It was a new turn of events. In all of her other adventures, the Sues had stayed together, and she was being thrust into a world she knew nothing about without the comfort of her friends being around her. It wasn't good.
"I'm afraid it's the only thing we can do until we can figure out why you're here. Please understand that I don't have a choice, I have to send you as far away from the others as I can."
Edea genuinely looked sorry for having to split them up, and Abeni believed her. If that is what the virus had in store for her, she'd just have to weather the storm and make the best of it.
"Well, then, I guess we need to get moving, then."
Abeni turned to Irvine and took his arm, her small hand nestled in the crook of the surprised gunslinger's elbow. Irvine looked to Edea with a raised eyebrow, asking silently if it was really necessary. The woman seemed to be more trouble than he had bargained for. The fact that he found her very appealing didn't help, either. When he had restrained her back in the house, his body had reacted strongly to her, and that meant trouble.
Edea nodded, then said, "I think that would be best. Just tell me one thing: Do you know how to shoot a gun?"
Abeni felt the slow smile cross her face and couldn't help bragging just a little bit. "Sure can! I can hit any target you put in front of me."
"Then I'm sure we'll get along just fine, Ben," Irvine chuckled, giving Abeni a nickname that was going to stick to her like glue. "My car is just outside the gates. If you're ready, we can get the lead out."
"No time like the present, I suppose," Abeni said, walking over to Edea and surprising them all by hugging the woman around the waist. "Thank you for taking care of us, and I'm sorry about punching you in the shoulder."
Edea smiled and smoothed the petite woman's hair as she hugged her back. "It's okay, just keep yourself safe. That will be enough thanks for me."
Edea watched them leave. She had been doing it a lot, lately, and she wished them well. The situation was getting better, but, if she couldn't find out why those people were there, it wouldn't stay that way for long.
"Was that Zell?" the man said in a sweet drawl. Edea had forgotten how soothing his voice could be. Even as a child, he had the ability to calm people down just by speaking to them, and, if that didn't work, his gun did.
